executive coaching

Executive coaching can help executives who have many causes of stress in their lives. Ensuring the organization runs smoothly can cause a great deal of stress for these leaders. An executive coach can help these leaders cope with the stress and make the right decisions for the organization. However, executive coaching is not the same as counseling. To understand more about executive coaching and counseling, it is important to understand the difference between the two.

Counseling

A counselor works with individuals to help them with mental health issues. For example, counselors may work with individuals to help treat addictions, work through trauma or diagnose other mental health issues. Counseling is designed to help the individual work through feelings.

Executive coaching

Executive coaching, on the other hand, is about helping high-level executives in organizations make the right decisions for the organization and to improve their interactions and the synergy with team members.  An executive coach may work with mutliple executives, or along with staff members in a group setting. The goal of an executive coach is to change the high-level executives and staff members' behavior and interactions in order to benefit the organization as a whole.

Executive coaching has a very narrow focus. Instead of focusing on the entire life of leadership and staff members, it focuses on very specific issues that relate to leadership's and team members' behaviors and interactions in the workplace. These narrowly defined issues are carefully chosen so that improving them will directly benefit the entire organization.

Counseling is focused on benefiting the individual. On the other hand, executive coaching is focused on benefiting leadership and team members in professional ways in order for an organization to benefit.

The process of executive coaching

While the exact process will vary depending on the coach, this type of coaching follows a general series of steps. After an executive coach has been paired with the leader or group of leaders, the coach will begin to collect information. This may include performance reports and feedback from managers and other employees.

The coach will then begin to create goals that can be measured and develop plans to bring about these goals. The coach will work with managers to determine when the goals have been met. They will work to track the progress of the employee and may work to create more goals as the initial ones have been met.

When to choose executive coaching

Organizations can use executive coaching to improve the performance of high-level staff. There are several reasons why an organization may choose to implement an executive coach:

  • To translate feedback from reports and other employees to an actionable plan
  • To facilitate on-the-job learning and growing
  • To help leaders become better aligned with the goals of the organization
  • To help executives gain top leadership skills

Choose executive coaching

Executive coaching is not the same thing as counseling and choosing the right type of coach for an organization is imperative. The right executive coach will have experience with helping top-level employees. This coach can help an organization increase its performance by giving executives the skills they need. When executives have top leadership skills, this will translate down through the entire organization.
